What is Black Obsidian?
Black obsidian is born out of fast cooling lava which flows from a volcano. Around since pre-historic times, black obsidian is a protective and energy clearing stone that can be used to ground and shield you from negativity. Here is how we use it and how it can help you.
While this stone is found in many locations worldwide finding the stone in ancient form is uncommon. Obsidian older than a few million years is rare due to the fact that the glass-like rock can be easily destroyed or altered by weathering, heat, or other processes.

Cleansing Obsidian
It’s a good practice to cleanse your stones before placing around your home, using in meditation practice, etc. Obsidian, like most stones, will have had a long journey of being handles, traded, and shipped before arriving in your possession. In doing so you will rid it of any unwanted energy and program it with your very own intention.
There are several different ways to reset your crystals. here are our favorite:
-
Smudging: Burn and extinguish palo santo, cedar, or sage and hold the stone in the plume of smoke until you feel the negative energy has gone.
-
Water: Run your stone under flowing water for a few minutes, or place it in salt water overnight. You can then place it in a sunny place to energize it.
-
Visualization: Imagine a bright golden light surrounding the crystal, with the intention of dissolving any negativity that the crystal is currently holding.
To program the crystal with your intention, you can hold it in your hand and set an intention for what you would like the crystal to help you with.
Final Thoughts
We love Black obsidian but keep in mind that this stone can and does work to show us our own reflections, including parts that may have been hidden or have gone unacknowledged. This stone shows us our reflections in order to give clarity and make space to heal. If you're feeling like it is bringing up too much, put it away in a drawer or in another room.
By showing us a reflection of ourselves, black obsidian give us more clarity around aspects that which are no longer serving us and that which we need to release.
And so it is... or something better.
